Types of Tire Defects & How They Occur
There are a number of ways in which tires can be defective. One of the most common defects occurs when tires “blow” while the car, motorcycle, or vehicle is in motion. When this happens, tire fragments can become wrapped around the hubcap or axel, causing the driver to lose control which can lead to an accident. Because this often occurs at high speeds, the results are often devastating.
Other common types of tire defects include:
- Tread and Belt Separation: Poor adhesion of steel to rubber can lead to tread and belt separation in steel-belted radial tires. This often occurs as a result of design and/or manufacturing defects and can lead to tire blowouts, exposure of the top steel belt, loss of control, and serious accidents.
- Sidewall Failures: Also known as zipper failures, sidewall failures occur when the outer wall of the tire fails during inflation. Though relatively rare, sidewall failures can cause catastrophic damage to both the person filling the tire and others nearby.
- Bead Failures: When a tire is overfilled, it can cause an explosion, especially when the bead wire is particularly weak. This is a rare occurrence, but it can and does occur, particularly when used tires are overfilled. This can even occur when used tires are filled according to safety margins.
- Multi-Piece Wheel/Rim Failures: Despite attempts by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) to ban multi-piece rims, these types of wheels are still in production. Multi-piece wheel/rim failures have led to numerous worker injuries and even deaths during tire mounting.
These are just some examples of common tire defects. There are many other types of defects that can be introduced at the design or manufacturing phase. Additionally, many tires lack proper safety warnings. When this occurs, ordinary use can lead to disastrous results.
