Part of the pledge that new Virginia State Police officers take reads, "I shall aid those in danger or distress, and shall strive always to make my State and Country a safer place in which to live. I shall wage unceasing war against crime in all its forms, and shall consider no sacrifice too great in the performance of my duty."

This sentence sums up very well the responsibilities of Virginia State Police officers and how they improve our safety and our everyday quality of life. Very simply, the VA state police patrol the streets, both preventing crimes and protecting citizens. When it comes to highway safety and car accident prevention, the police strive to curb speeding, reckless driving, and driving under the influence while at the same time educating Virginia residents about seatbelt safety, car seat safety, and the rules of the road.

Here are some more facts about the Virginia State Police Department:

· The Virginia State Police Department was founded in 1932 and is the largest police department in Virginia.

· Each trooper is issued the Sig Sauer P229 .357 sig DAK pistol, the Remington 870 12 gauge shotgun, and a Colt M4 Carbine patrol rifle to protect both themselves and the citizens of Virginia.

· The Virginia State Police Aviation Unit was formed on January 1, 1984, and consists of four Cessna 182 airplanes, four Bell 407 helicopters, one American Eurocopter BK117 helicopter, and two American Eurocopter B0-105 helicopters. The helicopters are used both for medical evacuation and for search and rescue missions.

· There are 55 officers in charge of regulating commercial vehicles across the state and preventing truck accidents.
