· The Virginia State Police Department was founded in 1932 and is the largest police department in Virginia.

· Each trooper is issued the Sig Sauer P229 .357 sig DAK pistol, the Remington 870 12 gauge shotgun, and a Colt M4 Carbine patrol rifle to protect both themselves and the citizens of Virginia.

· The Virginia State Police Aviation Unit was formed on January 1, 1984, and consists of four Cessna 182 airplanes, four Bell 407 helicopters, one American Eurocopter BK117 helicopter, and two American Eurocopter B0-105 helicopters. The helicopters are used both for medical evacuation and for search and rescue missions.

· There are 55 officers in charge of regulating commercial vehicles across the state and preventing truck accidents.
