US Consumer Product Safety Commission Information

The United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is an independent agency apart from the federal government that acts to protect American citizens from dangerous products. Formed in 1972 as part of the Consumer Product Safety Act, the CPSC works with manufacturers and retailers in order to ensure that products sold in the United States do not pose a risk of personal injury or death to those who buy them.

All in all, the CPSC regulates over 15,000 different types of consumer products, ranging from toys to kitchen products to house cleaners to grills to bicycles to appliances to cribs to power tools to lighters. Products that are not regulated by the CPSC include automobiles (which are regulated by the National Highway traffic Safety Administration) food and drugs (which are regulated by the Food & Drug Administration) and guns (which are regulated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives).

Specifically, the CPSC looks for product defects that may cause fire, electrical, chemical, or mechanical hazards or that may injure children. The CPSC credits itself in part for the 30 percent decline in consumer product injuries over the last 30 years of its existence.

When the CPSC recalls a product, they post the product information on their website along with the specifics of the recall (whether you can get your money back, whether you can order replacement parts, and how many people have been injured by the product according to reports). The CPSC also have an email subscription list that alerts readers of all new recalls.
