Defective Umbrella Strollers | Virginia Dangerous Child Product Attorneys

Umbrella strollers are very popular with new parents and it is easy to see why – the lightweight, foldable children’s strollers are easy to fold, unfold, pack, and transport. However a number of recent umbrella stroller recalls in 2009 and 2010 have revealed a hidden danger in many umbrella stroller models: sharp and dangerous hinges that can leave children and parents alike with serious lacerations or finger amputations.

In November, popular baby product company Maclaren recalled over 1 million of their umbrella strollers with the help of The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. The company announced that over the past ten years 15 children had suffered serious injury due to the strollers’ exposed hinges. The voluntary recall offered hinge cover safety repair kits to all stroller owners. The affected models include Volo, Triumph, Quest Sport, Quest Mod, Techno XT, Techno XLR, Twin Triumph, Twin Techno and Easy Traveller.

This January, 1.5 million Graco umbrella strollers were recalled for the same reasons – five fingertip amputations and two lacerations were reported in this case and once again repair kits were offered to stroller owners. The voluntary recall instructed parents to stop using the stroller immediately until the repair kit was utilized.

Both umbrella strollers met United States safety regulations, which makes many parents wonder if there should not be stricter regulations for umbrella strollers, especially when the defect has caused so many serious injuries over the last decade.
