We assume that the safest place for our babies are at home in their cribs - but unfortunately this may not be the case. Two large dropside crib recalls over the last two months have shined a spotlight on the dangers of defective cribs and the possibility of infant and toddler suffocation.

This month the US Consumer Product Safety Commission and Stork Craft, Inc., announced the largest crib recall in history: 2.1 million dropsied cribs were declared dangerous after a number of children suffocated or were seriously injured after being caught in the adjustable side of the crib. However, this is certainly not the first dangerous product crib recall in North Carolina, and it will probably not be the last.

Here are some defects that infant and toddler cribs could suffer from:

• Bars that are too wide. In some cases, the bars of a crib may be too wide, allowing an infant’s head or body to become trapped between two of the bars. These crib accidents can lead to serious injury, brain damage, and suffocation deaths.
• Mattresses with entrapment issues. Some crib mattresses may not fit correctly to the crib, allowing cracks and crevices between the wood and mattress. Babies can become wedged in these cracks and suffocate. Safety experts recommend that you never use one crib mattress in a different crib.
• Drop-side cribs. These cribs have one moving side that allows parents to better access their children – but the plastic hinges can break and children can become trapped in the adjustable side of the crib. Ten children have died in drop side cribs in recent years and the CPSC is now considering banning dropsied cribs altogether.
• Soft crib mattresses, pillows, and blankets. Crib pillows and blankets that are too soft or too fluffy can also be suffocation risks. Your child’s mattress should be firm and there should be no extra pillows or blankets in the crib that the child could become entangled with.
