Burn injuries can be some of the most painful and long-lasting injuries that you can receive in an accident. In many cases, burn injury victims must endure multiple surgeries, long-term physical therapy, skin grafts, permanent scarring, emotional trauma and months or years of pain. In some cases, burn injuries can result in lost or amputated limbs, disfigurement, infection, dehydration, loss of the sense of touch and sensation, muscle damage, loss of sweat glands, and self-esteem issues.

According to the American Burn Association and the National Institute of Health, one million people suffer serious burns each year and 45,000 people are burned so severely that they require hospitalization. Forty-five hundred burn victims die each year from their injuries.

• Each year, 20,000 people suffer burns over more than 20 percent of their body.
• As many of 10,000 people die each year after a burn injury leads to a deadly infection.
• Three-fourths of burn deaths occur at the scene of the accident. The other one-fourth of burn deaths either occur mostly due to infection.
• The majority of fire-related death are not caused by burns, but rather by smoke inhalation.
• Hot water burns (from taps or showerheads) cause more burn injuries than any other.
• The most common types of defective product burns stem from space heaters, curling irons, irons, kitchen appliances, fireworks, ovens.
• Home fires and residential burn injuries are much more likely to occur in winter months.
• While 96 percent of homes have fire alarms install, only 75 percent have fire alarms that work correctly.
