A chain-reaction bus crash injured 13 marines and the civilian driver of one bus this month as the caravan was on its way to Virginia for training. The three buses were en route to board the ships of the USS Bataan Strike Group for the 22nd MEU's certification exercise when the rear-end accident occurred. When the first bus slowed to a stop, the second bus followed in kind. The third bus, however, did not stop in time and slammed into the second bus. The second bus then slammed into the first bus.
Four other vehicles were also involved in the bus wreck, though two were not damaged and though no one else was injured. Eleven of the thirteen injured marines were released from the hospital the same day, while two other remained under medical care for further observation with more serious injuries. The driver of the third bus was the most seriously hurt when he became pinned between the buses. He was extracted from the bus by emergency workers. Read Article |
