Wythe County Focus On “Click It Or Ticket” Program in May

Last year in Wythe County, Virginia, six of the eight traffic accident fatalities involved unbuckled seatbelts. Now, the county's sheriff's office is fighting back my focusing on seatbelt safety across the county this month thought the "Click it or ticket" program.

Especially in the rural areas of the county, Captain Chad Trivitt reported that seatbelt usage in Wythe County is drastically below statewide usage. While just about 80 percent of all Virginians buckle up, just below 60 percent of those in Wythe were found to be using their seatbelts. The main culprits are males between the ages of 18 and 34 who drive pick-up trucks, while senior drivers are more likely to buckle up.

To do their part, police are paying special attention to seatbelt use when pulling residents over for other traffic violations. There are also several safety checkpoints planned - in hopes of prevent future car accident deaths or serious injuries.
